There is a blow out preventer that is capable of stopping large oil leaks from reaching the ocean from where they are sourced. It seals the well, which is also the hole where the oil comes out. Think of it as a straw in your favorite drink; when you suck, the drink comes up the straw. A blowout preventer usually includes many parts that work together to make sure that nothing goes wrong and the equipment is safe. Most notably, this is what is referred to as the blow out preventer stack which may weigh several tons! In fact it can weigh over 100 tons! Under it the wellhead, which includes several valves that can seal the well tightly. Valves: Valves act like doors, opening and closing in order to allow or stop flow.
