drill rig kelly

The Kelly is a major component of a drilling rig. It makes everything jell. You can kind of think of it as the spine of the drill rig. It joins the above ground equipment with the drill string below. Without the Kelly, the drill rig simply couldn’t do its job properly. Now, let’s find out more about what the Kelly really does!

The Kelly is a long pipe with a hollow center. It transmit power from the rotary table to the drill string. The drill string is rotated by the rotary table as it digs down. The Kelly also allows drilling fluid to be pumped down into the drill string and back up to the surface. This fluid brings rock fragments along with it.

Understanding the Function of the Drill Rig Kelly

When it’s time to begin drilling, the Kelly bar attaches to the top drive or kelly bushing on a drill rig. The kelly curves to the rear and hangs off the drilling rig in the kelly bushing when the Kelly is raised. As the drill rig begins its rotation, the Kelly bar transmits that rotation down to the drill string. That helps it burrow into the ground. The Kelly bar also prevents the drill string from being rotated into a corkscrew shape during the drilling.
